This is a wooden model kit of a building or other structure.
Fukuyama Castle is a massive flatland castle built in 1622 by the first lord of Fukuyama Domain, Mitsunari Mizuno. The castle keep is a five-story, six-tiered structure with a layered tower style. It is considered a masterpiece of Edo-period architecture that emphasizes elegance over practicality, adorned with chidori-hafu and karahafu gables, and the top floor is decorated with balustrades and flower-headed windows.
The castle's northern wall and windows are covered in iron plates, making it the only castle in Japan with such a feature. Another distinctive characteristic is the rain cover, added around the mid-Edo period. Unfortunately, the castle keep was destroyed in the Fukuyama air raid of 1945, and the current structure is a post-war reconstruction.
During the Reiwa era (from 2020 to 2022), a major renovation project was undertaken to recreate the appearance of Fukuyama Castle before its destruction. This included restoring the iron plates on the northern side, the window shapes on the top floor, and other features.
This model kit, designed at a 1/150 scale, is based on the pre-destruction plans of Fukuyama Castle's keep by castle and historical architecture model artist Mitsuru Shima. The precision of the iron plate cover on the north side is achieved using etched parts. The model also replicates the renovation shapes from the Reiwa era. Additionally, optional parts are available separately to restore the castle to its pre-war appearance, including the upper-level rain cover, focusing on the cultural value of Fukuyama Castle, once designated as a national treasure.
