"The Cleveland class of light cruisers is the largest class of cruisers the navy has ever completed. With 52 ships ordered, 29 completed as cruisers and 9 as CVL’s the Cleveland success can be attributed to being in construction at the time of the buildup for WWII. The first Cleveland joined the Navy in October of 1942 and a member of the class was present at all the major battles following. No cruiser member of the class was lost to enemy action and many saw service long into the 60’s when they were converted to the first missile ships of the era."
