Shizuoka Hobby Show 2017


New and exciting models await at the 56th Shizuoka Hobby Show! This year's event will be held May 11-14 at Twin Messe Shizuoka, and we'll be there to bring you the scoop from the show floor! In the meantime, here's a sneak peek at some of the new items that major manufacturers have announced in advance, with many now open for preorder.

Hasegawa's newest offerings begin with a newly-tooled curbside kit of the classic BMW 2002 tii, with two types of side view mirrors and front bumpers! A new kit of Hayate Immelman's VF-31J Siegfried from "Macross Delta" is also slated for June arrival, and a new-tool kit of the WWII Japanese destroyer Yugumo, a veteran of the Battle of Midway, is also on the way! The Mechatro WeGo 06 Power Arm is a pair of Mechatro WeGo 'bots outfitted with upgraded arms, and the new Suzuki Jimny JA11-1 kit reflects its second-generation changes!




Aoshima has some sharp new offerings, led by the all-newly-tooled Brabham BT52 1983 Monaco Grand Prix! This 1/20-scale tribute to Nelson Piquet's world-champion speed machine has a slew of faithful features, including its BMW inline four-cylinder turbo engine, as well as a removable cowl. Watch for it in July!


Maritime modelers have an all-new tooling to look forward to, too, with the 1/700 JMSDF Mashu-Class Supply Ship SP launching in June! She's loaded with an array of fighter aircraft and vehicles.


Next month's 1/24 Lamborghini Diablo GTR is another of Aoshima's deliciously detailed kits, with new parts making this super car's interior and exterior even better. New parts also make for eye-catching releases this summer, with the 1/24 LB Works R35 GT-R Ver.1 a gotta-get for Liberty Walk fans, and the 1/700 Japanese Cruiser Kitakami Kaiten Carrier reproducing the warship's 1944 modification.




Bandai is bringing the long-awaited MG Justice Gundam to this year's Hobby Show, and we can't wait to see it in all its glory! The MG Justice Gundam comes with its unique Fatum-00 unit that can transform without swapping any parts, and is sure to look impressive in person.


Also making an appearance from their Gundam lineup is the HG Barzam from "Zeta Gundam," the HG Gundam AN-01 Tristan from "Mobile Suit Gundam Twilight Axis," the HG Gundam Dantalion from "Iron-Blooded Orphans," and whatever surprises are in store for us at the event!


Sci-Fi fans should also look out for their display of the 1/1000 Dreadnought from "Space Battleship Yamato 2202" that will feature LED lights and sound effects!


Fine Molds


Fine Molds brings us a fantastic new selection of vehicles to set your sights on! Kicking things off is the 1/35 IJA Type 4 15cm Self-Propelled Gun Ho-Ro, which had the largest firepower of any participating vehicle in the IJA at the time! As this is a newly tooled kit, Fine Molds have taken particular care to precisely reproduce its distinctive open top, large 150mm Type 38 howitzer armament, and ammunition boxes.


The 1/35 JGSDF Mitsubishi Type 73 Light Truck (MAT) is also sure to please. This light truck is armed with the wire-guided anti-tank missile commonly known as "MAT," which is again a completely new mold! The Type 73 Light Truck can carry four MAT. Following on from that is the 1/35 JGSDF Type 60 Armoured Personnel Carrier (MAT), which also comes equipped with the MAT for extra firepower!


Fine Molds have also updated their especially popular kit for the 1/35 IJA Type 3 Medium Tank Chi-Nu with a partly assembled crawler belt made of plastic. This change more accurately reproduces the weight of the track, and is more durable.


Finally, the 1/700 Close In Weapon System for Modern Ships is sure to be a useful kit for many modern warship modellers! The close-in weapon system is used by many ships worldwide, and Fine Molds have now reproduced this distinctive point-defense weapon system in fine detail. The CIWS can also be built in one of three types for even more versatility!




Get your workbench ready for Platz' breathtaking kit of the JASDF T-2 Supersonic Speed Upper Training Aircraft in 1/72 scale! They're also bringing out the T-1B version of the training aircraft in the same scale so you have two disctinctive types to choose from.


Also on the way are new additions to their popular "Girls und Panzer" kit series, with the highly anticipated 1/53 Kettenkrad taking center stage, followed by the 1/72 StuG.III Ausf.F with Kaba-San Team markings! And don't miss their new Shine Blade KIWA, a fine filing tool for your detailing needs!




Tamiya are set to bring us something very special with the DCR-01 - MA Chassis! This addition to the Mini 4WD PRO series features a body that is divided into three parts, so it can be enjoyed with a closed or open body shape, and you can also easily choose the perfect color combination for you by combining it with optional body sets! It also features a newly designed wheel, finished with super thin spokes. This concept machine is unlike any Mini 4WD before!


Tamiya transitions to the water for their next fun release - a Water Scooter! With a motor and centrifugal pump, this seaworthy scooter will really power through the water! Speed can be increased and decreased, and it can be rotated left and right with a rudder.


Along with their fun new kits, Tamiya also brings us a useful tool with the Craft Side Cutter - For Plastic/Soft Metal. This tool is ideal for cutting plastic parts for RC cars. It can also cut through soft metal wires, such as copper and brass, resulting in a super clean and smooth cut!




From ICM, we're looking forward to the 1/35 scale figure kits featuring French Infantry in Gas Masks, which were seen in 1918 during World War I. They're also introducing a 1/35 scale kit of a Model T Australian Army Car from the same time period, which features a crest on the front and mounted gun. We'll also be on the lookout for their 1/35 scale Germany KHD S3000 SS M Maultier, the 1/48 scale Ju 88A-4 Torp/A-17 WWII German Torpedo Plane, and the 1/24 American Firemen from 1910!




Revell will be rolling into the show with a new boxing of the classic 1976 Ford Torino, as well as a number of armor kits such as the Sd.kfz 167 Stug IV and LKW 5T Mil GI truck--and for fans of pirates everywhere, a 1/150th scale Black Pearl!




AMT/ERTL makes the devastatingly beautiful 2017 Chevy Camaro 50th Anniversary version available to modelers everywhere, complete with fully detailed engine, chassis and interior, and special 50th Anniversary custom parts just like on the real machine! They're also reprising the mighty Mack R685ST Semi Tractor truck, with wheels missing in previous releases restored and expanded decals! And maybe best of all, the U.S.S. Enterprise Box set is an amazing collection of seven kits of the most famous starship in the Federation at 1:2500 scale--including a brand-new NX-01! Snap-fit assembly makes them fast and easy to put together, and decals are included too!




Takom brings us a pair of newly tooled US Medium Tank M47 Patton tank kits, as well as an Israeli Defense force Medium Tank Tiran 4!




Meng continues their line of cute super-deformed kits from the hit game "World War Toons" with the release of new German King Tiger and Soviet KV-2 heavy tanks! A super-deformed version of the American WWII aircraft carrier Lexington is also sailing into stock soon as well!

A new kit maker by the name of Revosys looks to make a big splash with their new kit of an interesting subject: the VK36.01, which was an early Henshel design that led to the creation of one of the most famous tanks of all time--the Tiger I!


Wingnut Wings will soon be releasing another WWI subject in 1/32 scale, this time one that many fans have been waiting a long time for--the fearsome German Fokker D.VII!


To the delight of 1/72 scale U.S. bomber fans everywhere, Valom will soon be releasing the North American B-45 Tornado in both early WWII looking -A configurations and the later Cold War -C variant!


A number of other manufacturers have new items on the way as well, including Sword with their new kit of the Ki-102a Kou (Randy) in 1/72nd scale, Atlantis will be showing off their reissue of the classic Aurora DC-9, and many more from the likes of AZ Models, KP Models, Special Hobby, Eduard, Airfix, Amusing Hobby, and Copper State Models!
