After 16 years the GT-R baton was passed from the R32 to the R33. With pros and cons from the larger body size, testing through design and development clearly demonstrated the superior performance of the R33. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Skyline, Nissan's factory tuner Autech Japan, developed this special 40th Anniversary Skyline GT-R Autech with the first revival of the 4-door since the famous 'hakosuka'.

On top of installing the RB26DETT in the basic Skyline sedan model, the Autech version mounted a 4-door body to the floor of the GT-R. Evidence of this is the Autech BNR 33 version shares the same chassis structure as the GT-R.

The exterior has been specially redesigned, including the rear fenders, doors, and even the wheelhouse, to reproduce the GT-R style in a four-door model. To create a mature, high-performance sports sedan, design features include small front spoiler, spoiler-less rear, and interior with bucket rear seats (2 passengers) and a Kenwood sound system. The color scheme was set to the popular 3-color design.

Key mechanics are based on standard GT-R cars such as the RB26DETT + 5-speed MT, Atessa E-TS, and mechanical LSD. Performance was assessed as being "no different to the GT-R".

At 4,985K Yen the Autech version was only 100K Yen more than the 4,885K Yen for the standard GT-R. This is an absolute bargain considering the special components and effort that went into the 422-unit production. Nissan's famous test driver Mr. Hiroyoshi Kato, also known as the modern master, also owns one of these units.
