This is an injection-plastic ship model kit.
The Arleigh Burke-class of missile destroyers are used by the U.S. navy. Although this ship is an expensive Aegis ship, it has achieved mass construction of more than 70 -- the largest number of surface combat ships built by the U.S. Navy after World War II due to its efficient design. The Curtis Wilbur is the fourth ship in the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers, and is missile defense capable. She was named after Curtis Wilbur, the 43rd Secretary of the Navy under President Calvin Coolidge. She was laid down in 1991 at Bath Ironworks in Bath, Maine and commissioned in Long Beach, California in 1994. She moved her home port from San Diego to Yokosuka, Japan in 1996 and joined the 7th Fleet. I 2002, she participated in Exercise Misirex 02 near the Okinawa Islands with U.S. ships based in Yokosuka and Sasebo, and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force supply ship Sagami. In March 2011, Curtis Wilbur was dispatched with the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan to support areas of Japan affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. She completed her 25-year forward-deployment mission in 2021, and she sailed from her homeport, Yokosuka Air Base, for transfer to San Diego.
