Although the USS Pinckney is an expensive Aegis ship, it is one of a class that's achieved construction of over 70 ships -- the largest number of surface combat ships built by the U.S. Navy after World War II -- due to its efficient design. The Pinckney is the 41st Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, named after Petty Officer 1st Class William Pinckney, who served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise during World War II, and received the Navy Cross for his brave rescue efforts.
