This is an injection-plastic ship model kit.
The Kairyu is a two-seater winged special submarine and underwater weapon that attacks enemy ships with torpedoes or ramming. The Kairyu was developed at the suggestion of Uichiro Asano, an instructor at the Naval Engineering School, and was called "SS hardware" in order to maintain confidentiality during its development stage. This ship was developed as a special attack weapon for the mainland decisive battle, and 224 of this ship were built by the end of the war at Yokosuka Naval Arsenal using airplane parts; approximately 207 more were in production. Unlike normal submarines, it uses hydrofoils to ascend and descend like an aircraft. The Kairyu had good stability and maneuverability, and since it was easier to operate than other submarines, it was possible to operate it with a short training period. The Kairyu's armament consisted of two torpedoes with a diameter of 45cm, which were housed inside the launcher. Although th Japanese Navy set up bases in various places and deployed the Kairyu, it was not put into actual combat on a large scale because the mainland decisive battle was avoided due to the end of the war.
