The M36 is an anti-tank self-propelled artillery gun developed by the U.S. Army to counter the heavy armoring of German tanks after 1942. At the time of development, the plan was to mount the 90mm anti-aircraft gun M1 on the M10 anti-tank self-propelled gun developed earlier, but the M10 turret had problems mounting the 90mm gun, so a new turret with a power swivel was designed, and the T71 with the new turret was completed.
Since the test results of the T71 were favorable, production began in April 1944, and in June of the same year, it was formalized as the M36. The M36B1 was a modified version of the M4A3 tank, with the turret of the M36 mounted on the body of the M4A3 tank, since modifications to the M10A1, the base vehicle, were not enough to meet the demand.
The M36B1 was produced at Fischer Tank Arsenal from October to December 1944. 187 M36B1 tanks were produced.
