From the manufacturer:
The DD-118 FUYUZUKI was completed in March 2014 as the fourth ship of the AKIZUKI class general-purpose defense ship, which entered service for the first time in seven years since the TAKANAMI class appeared. Her name was succeeded from the FUYUZUKI, the anti-aircraft destroyer in WWII, which participated in the special sortie to Okinawa with the BB Yamato and survived. The vital role of the class is Local Area Defense of the fleet while other Aegis ships such as KONGO class are so much dedicated to Ballistic Missile Defense that the protection from enemy's aircrafts and anti-ship missiles tends to be poor.
Therefore AKIZUKI's air defense is needed to be capable; she is equipped with FCS-3A multifunction radars, which were improved versions of those the HYUGA class equipped, and OYQ-11 Advanced Combat Direction System. She has enlarged superstructures and a tower mast which looks like that of the ATAGO class. That makes her stealth effect higher than the MURASAME and TAKANAMI class. She has a stern flap first in JMSDF ships, which contributes to high speed, stability, fuel efficiency, and noise reduction. Many of her new mechanisms have been tested by the ASE-6102 ASUKA experiment ship, so the AKIZUKI class is to be the model ship of future JMSDF defense ships. As of September 2014, she is deployed in Escort Squadron 7 of Escort Flotilla 3, anchored in Maizuru.
